Sodus Point, N.Y. —
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has suspended their search for a man who went missing after his boat capsized on Sodus Bay.

According to Chief Deputy Bob Hetzke, the sheriff’s office, along with the U.S. Coast Guard stopped the search just after 6 p.m. tonight, with plans to resume early Tuesday morning.

At this point, Hetzke said, what was a rescue mission, is now considered a recovery effort.

The 66-year-old man, Alan Shultz 66 of Margaretta Road, is from Sodus Point. At about 10 a.m. Monday morning, Shultz and 48-year-old David Schueler, of Kenyon Road, Williamson, were fishing in the bay, when their 16-foot aluminum boat was hit by a large wave, capsizing it Hetzke said.

The two men were plunged into 49-degree water.

“They were clinging to the capsized boat for about a half hour when one of the men drifted away from it,” Hetzke said.

Schueler was rescued at about 2:30 this afternoon, after he was found still clinging to the overturned craft by a passing fisherman.

“He is spending the night at Newark-Wayne Hospital,” Hetzke said. “He is being treated for hypothermia.”

Neither were wearing lifejackets, he said. Wearing a flotation device, the chief deputy added, may have helped out in this situation.

The sheriff office's two boats and marine crews were assisted by boats from Sodus Point, North Rose and Alton fire departments, along with Red Creek Rescue Divers. The Canadian Coast Guard responded with a helicopter and the United States Coast Guard responded with a helicopter and two boats. Local fire departments also conducted a ground search on the northwest shore of the bay.

The search is set to resume at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.
