Missing Syracuse woman's birthday passes without her being found

Heather Ballard
Syracuse, N.Y. -- Linda Ballard baked a birthday cake Wednesday for her daughter Heather, but Heather didn’t celebrate her 28th birthday with her mother. Heather was reported missing on May 7, a few weeks after any of her family members had seen her.

“Today’s my daughter’s birthday,” Linda Ballard said Wednesday, “and we don’t know where she is.”
On June 12, the Syracuse Police Department announced that Heather Ballard was missing and released three photos of her. She was described as white, 5 feet 2 or 5 feet 3 with long brown hair and brown eyes. There was no evidence that Ballard’s disappearance was linked to any criminal activity, Sgt. Tom Connellan said.

Heather Ballard, of 521 Catherine St., Syracuse, has four children — two with one man and two with another, her mother said. Linda Ballard has custody of the two younger children, age 3 and 4. The older children — age 8 and 9 — live with their father and his mother.

Linda Ballard said she hasn’t seen Heather since Friday April 13; Linda’s husband, Ed, and the two younger children saw her on April 14.

“She’s done things before and left for a day or two,” Linda Ballard said. “But next month, it will be three months that she’s been gone.”

Heather Ballard hasn’t touched her Facebook account since she has been missing and her cellphone isn’t working, her mother said.
Linda Ballard said Heather loved her children and kept track of them even though she didn’t have custody of them.

“My daughter had demons, but even with demons, she would always see her children,” Linda Ballard said.
Those demons include an “on-again, off-again thing with drugs” and “some problems with mental health,” including paranoia and anxiety attacks. She worked sporadically as a waitress and a stocker and spent some time on public assistance, her mother said. She hadn’t worked since last summer. On Aug. 27, she was arrested and charged with resisting arrest after getting into a fight at the state fair, but she has never served jail time.

Her problems seemed to get worse in March when she started using synthetic marijuana, which was legal at the time, Linda Ballard said. Instead of being happy and “scrappy,” Heather Ballard was often in a stupor, Linda Ballard said.

“She said it was legal so she can use it, but it seemed to make her moods worse,” Linda Ballard said. “She was acting very non-Heather.”
She is known to spend time in the area of the 500 block of Catherine Street and the 400 block of James Street, police said.

Anyone with any information on her whereabouts is asked to call the Syracuse Police Department Missing Persons Unit at 315-442-5330.
