22-Year Old Ian Burnet Is An Engineering Major From New Kent County

Richmond, VA (1140wrva.com) - Family and friends are doing everything they can to find 22-year old Ian Burnet... a VCU engineering major missing in New York City. Meaghan King -- who's been a friend of Ian's for more than 5 years -- says the last time anyone heard from him is when he talked to his roommate December 30th. He has not been seen at the apartment in New York at 139th near Riverside where he was supposed to be staying. Meaghan says he did not take his cellphone or any money wherever he may be.

Ian bussed up to New York City the day after Christmas. Meaghan says his roommate took him to the bus station and saw him get on. A published report says his mom exchanged texts with him December 27th, and the roommate phone call was the 30th.

He is a white male, 5'10" and about 160 pounds. He has green eyes and curly brown hair. Meaghan says they've set up a Facebook page called "FIND IAN BURNET". There is also a big page on New York State's missing person's page.

UPDATED: Young man, Ian Burnet, missing in New York City since before New Year; has family in Jersey City
Jan 06, 2012 | 3467 views | 2 | 9 | |

Ian Burnet at Christmas 2011, days before he disappeared.
JERSEY CITY AND BEYOND -- A Jersey City family is involved in the search for their cousin who hasn't been heard from since visiting New York City in the days after Christmas.

Ian Burnet, 22, hails from Richmond, Va. and was visiting friends in New York City at the end of December. He is a student at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Various reports say that Burnet took a bus to the city the day after Christmas and last contacted his parents by text on Dec. 27. A roommate of his says he spoke with him on Dec. 30.

That's where the trail grows cold.

According to a Facebook page set up to find Burnet, his father and brother have been passing out flyers in New York City to find him. (You must log into Facebook to see the page.)

To look at and print a flyer for Burnet, click here. UPDATE: A person who says he's Burnet's sibling posted these details on Reddit::

"His last credit transactions were for a $20 Metro card on the 30th and a Burger King transaction we believe was on the 31st. He had been staying [on] W 139th St in Harlem, with two vietnamese girls and a few people I never met. My father and I traveled in our family minivan to the city yesterday and visited his apartment. The girls he'd been staying with had left, and all his bags were left behind. He left his phone, his wallet, his laptop, his trees, his iPod, and all his money. He did NOT leave his ID, a jacket, or the Metro card he bought... we believe these items were on him.

"We've put up fliers and we've talked to the shelters and the cops but I don't know what else to do. He has a history of depression and he was in a strange place. He was an engineer, a redditor, and the most important person in my life. I need your help."

RICHMOND, Va. - A 22-year-old Virginia Commonwealth University student, whose father is the cousin of Jersey City resident Althea Bernheim, has been missing since Dec. 30, according to reports.

On Dec. 26, Ian Burnet took a bus to New York City where planned to celebrate the New Year with some friends from school. He texted his mother, Nancy Burnet, the following day and texted his roommate from about 4 p.m., on Dec. 30.

He was last seen near 138th to 139th streets in West Harlem, reports said.
“He is of slight build and looks younger than he really is,” said Ian’s father, Mark Burnet. “He was an Eagle Scout, so he can take care of himself.”

Ian Burnet is described as a “bright honors student” who is studying engineering.
Fliers and social media are being used to enlist aid in locating him. More than 1,000 people have already joined the Facebook fan page entitled, “FIND IAN BURNET.”

“Our efforts are to alert the media and put up fliers in hope that someone has spotted Ian and we can know that he is alive and safe,” said Bernheim, a big name in downtown Jersey City politics.
Ian Burnet’s family traveled to New York City Thursday, to search the area in person. They scoured the Upper West Side from 145th Street to Riverside Park, which the 22-year-old liked to frequent. They then returned to Virginia to wait for what they hope is positive news.

Police are currently monitoring his cell phone and credit cards for any activity in addition to checking hospitals and interviewing people in the area. Investigators do not suspect foul play.
“It’s heart-warming to see so much support and so many people caring and reaching out to help us,” said Nancy Burnet.

A Virginia Commonwealth University student from New Kent County apparently disappeared in New York last week, authorities said.

New Kent Sheriff F.W. Howard Jr. said there is no evidence of foul play in the disappearance of Ian Burnet, but that it is out of character for him to lose touch with his family.

Burnet, 22, left on a bus Dec. 26 from Richmond to meet two friends in New York City, where they planned to spend the holiday break, Howard said.

Burnet texted his mother Dec. 27 and told her he was fine and had made it to New York, Howard said. He texted his father about 5 p.m. Dec. 30 and texted his VCU roommate that same evening.

A friend who had been in New York with Burnet told Burnet's mother that her son had left the apartment where he and friends were staying on Dec. 30 and hadn't come back, Howard said. Burnet left his cellphone behind and apparently has not used a credit card since then.

"We have him listed as a missing person based on his mother's report to us, and we have been in contact with the New York PD in reference to that," Howard said.

Burnet's mother reported him missing to the New Kent Sheriff's Office on Tuesday.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the New Kent Sheriff's Office at (804) 966-9500.
