A Virginia Commonwealth University student from New Kent County apparently disappeared in New York last week, authorities said.
New Kent Sheriff F.W. Howard Jr. said there is no evidence of foul play in the disappearance of Ian Burnet, but that it is out of character for him to lose touch with his family.
Burnet, 22, left on a bus Dec. 26 from Richmond to meet two friends in New York City, where they planned to spend the holiday break, Howard said.
Burnet texted his mother Dec. 27 and told her he was fine and had made it to New York, Howard said. He texted his father about 5 p.m. Dec. 30 and texted his VCU roommate that same evening.
A friend who had been in New York with Burnet told Burnet's mother that her son had left the apartment where he and friends were staying on Dec. 30 and hadn't come back, Howard said. Burnet left his cellphone behind and apparently has not used a credit card since then.
"We have him listed as a missing person based on his mother's report to us, and we have been in contact with the New York PD in reference to that," Howard said.
Burnet's mother reported him missing to the New Kent Sheriff's Office on Tuesday.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the New Kent Sheriff's Office at (804) 966-9500.
