Michelle Eason
There is no shortage of suspects in the disappearance of Michelle Eason.

The City of Poughkeepsie woman disappeared in September 1997. Eason, then 26, was a known prostitute and was thought to have had a drug problem. She was last seen in the area of the city’s Main Street.

Eason disappeared during the two-year killing spree of convicted serial killer Kendall Francois, spawning theories that she was one of his victims — a charge Francois adamantly denied. Francois killed eight women between 1996 and 1998 and crammed their remains into a crawl space or attic inside his Town of Poughkeepsie home.

Detective Sgt. Walt Horton, a 43-year veteran of the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, has been assigned to the Eason case since its inception.

“(Francois) lied in that interview,” Horton said. “He said he knew her, but he never patronized her. We had people who’ve seen them together on several occasions.”

Francois is not the only suspect. At the time Eason went missing, she was living with drug dealers in an apartment near Main and North Cherry streets, Horton said.

Horton said there was an unconfirmed report Eason might have “ripped off” a package and had been killed as a result. But he admitted that theory was weak.

“That’s really not how drug dealers operate,” he said. “When they kill someone, they want people to know.”

He said another theory was that her boyfriend at the time was responsible. The boyfriend was considered suspicious after he theorized that the drug dealers “put her feet in a bucket, filled it with concrete and threw her in the river,” Horton said.

The detective sergeant said police interviewed the boyfriend many times, but he refused to take a polygraph because he said he was on medication.

To Horton’s knowledge, the most recent lead in the case came when Eason’s teenage daughter asked police to interview her stepmother, who knew Eason and might have had information on her disappearance. Horton said that never checked out.

Eason is about 5 feet 2 inches tall and would be 42 years old today. Anyone with information on this case may call the City of Poughkeepsie police detectives at 845-451-4142.
