Search continues for missing man

It's been a long three days for one family in Elmira Heights. Randy Nichols has been missing since Tuesday. Elmira Heights Police have been searching for him, but they need the public's help. Our Lara Greenberg has more on how Nichols' family and police are working to find him.

ELMIRA HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- "I want my husband to see me and to know that he's loved and that his grandkids miss him and that he needs to come home."

Claudia Nichols says it's time for her husband Randy to come home. The 48-year-old man left his Elmira Heights home Tuesday and hasn't been seen since.

"No matter what the reason for him leaving, he needs to come home. You know, that's our main focus. He's gotta come home. We can work through anything, you know, no matter what it is. The family can work together, pull together," said Randy Nichols' wife, Claudia.

Police say Randy Nichols was on his way to visit his mother who lives in this building behind me, just down the street from his own home. But police say he never arrived.

"At that point, we listed him as a missing person and just started to track down anybody that had a connection with Randy," said Elmira Heights Police Chief Rick Churches.

Police say the last time Nichols was seen was on the Main Street Bridge in Elmira at around 4 p.m. Tuesday. Nichols is 5-foot-6 and 160 pounds, with grey hair. He was wearing a grey T-shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers. Nichols' wife says this isn't the first time something like this has happened.

"Long long time ago, over many 13 years ago, he had a little issue with depression and things and he was only gone not even 24 hours. And I didn't report him missing," said Nichols.

Neither Nichols nor the police know why he left. But like last time, depression is their only guess.

"I just feel that he's maybe had some physical ailments that may have plagued him, as well as some changes in his work environment that, you know, maybe he's a little depressed about. But nothing that altogether stands out as you know he definitely made a statement or anything like that," said Churches.

The police department continues to receive phone calls about sightings, but Churches says nothing's panned out yet. Meanwhile Claudia Nichols just wants to be with her husband again.

"I love you no matter what. We've been together 20 years. Nothing can keep us apart. You know that you. You need to come home," said Nichols.

On August 31, 2010, Randy Nichols left his home on College Avenue in Elmira Heights, NY to walk to his mother's apartment in Villa Serene, a short distance away. He never made it to his mother's apartment. He was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt, dark jeans and black sneakers. He has grey hair and always wears a hat and sunglasses.
